Hear Leon Bates discuss the challenges that African-American musicians have faced.

Pianist Leon Bates will discuss African-American musicians from the Civil War period (1861-1865) to the present, focusing on the historical challenges faced either seeking or maintaining careers, the sacrifices and other choices made due to a lack of market for those talented individuals, the significance Brown v. the Board of Education held for musicians, and the ability to sustain careers in performance and composition.
Bates will also discuss luminary exceptions to the above, including Marian Anderson, Roland Hayes, Paul Robeson, as well as his own personal experiences.
He will play selections from African American composers: Sonata #1 by George Walker; In the Bottoms Suite (1913) by Nathaniel Dett; and Piano Rag by Scott Joplin.
